School of Water Resources Science and Technology
The School of Water Resources Science and Technology was established to contribute to the overall mandate of the University by spearheading development and management of water resources in arid and semi arid lands of Kenya through teaching, research and capacity development in hydrology, water resources, fisheries and aquaculture technology.
The School lays special emphasis on practical training and field trips, work placement as well as individual student research projects are major components of our training. Our academic programmes provide an integrated coverage of both the scientific, technical, social-economic and political aspects of water resources planning and management, fisheries and aquaculture. Through the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity development in Higher Education (NICHE) the School is implementing a capacity building programme to deliver competent human resources in integrated water resource management and aquaculture for equitable and sustainable livelihoods in Kenya’s arid and semi arid lands through establishing and strengthening partnerships with other institutions, communities, private sector and labour market stakeholders and formulating market driven courses.

The School of Water Resources Science and Technology is made up of the following three departments:
Department of Hydrology and Water Resources Management
Department of Fisheries Management and Aquaculture Technology
Department of Aquatic Sciences

The following programmes are offered through the three departments.
BSc. (Hydrology and Water Resources Management)
BSc. (Fisheries management and Aquaculture Technology)
BSc (Aquatic Sciences)

MSc. ( Integrated Water Resources and Watershed Management)

Diploma in Integrated Water Resources Management

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH
Other tailor –made short courses targeting specific groups will be offered from time to time by the School. These courses will be aimed at addressing specific community needs and will therefore be an important contribution by the school to community service and outreach. Such courses include: Watershed Management, Pond Construction and Management, Fish Harvesting Techniques, Hatchery establishment and Management, Rainwater Harvesting etc.

CAREER PROSPECTS
The enactment of the Water Act 2000 heralded a new era Kenya. This led to establishment of several water regulatory and water service providing bodies including the Water Resource Management Authority (WARMA) , TANATHI , the Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF) etc. Furthermore, decentralization of Municipal water supply had led to creation of numerous water and sanitation companies, e.g the Kitui Water and Sanitation Company.
Secondly, the success of the aquaculture development component under the Kenya Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) has elicited fresh interest and focus on aquaculture as viable economic activity.
Our graduates will therefore be strategically placed to play a leading role in further development of these sectors.
The graduates will not only receive training in basic water and fisheries sciences, but also in the applied disciplines of water planning and management, conflict management and transformation in water, water economics and aquatic health as well as fisheries Management, Planning, Extension and Aquaculture. The graduates of our programmes will therefore be equipped with the essential skills to venture into self employment as well as consultancies.

CURRENT RESEARCH
The research interests of the school of Water Resources Science and Technology include Hydrology, Water Quality, Water management, Fish and fisheries biology and Aquaculture.

As a School we are currently involved in the following research undertakings:
1.    Promotion of surface runoff and rainwater harvesting for application in Aquaculture and horticulture development in Kitui District, Kenya. Funded by the Kenya National Council for Science and Technology.
2.    Capacity Building to deliver competent human resources in integrated water resource management and aquaculture for equitable and sustainable livelihoods in Kenya’s arid and semi arid lands and beyond.  A NUFFIC NICHE Project.
