The Department teaches the following disciplines: Mineralogy, Petrology, Palaeontology, Economic Geology, Structural Geology and Tectonics, Hydrogeology, Exploration Geophysics, Exploration Geochemistry, Stratigraphy among others.
Students in Geological Sciences enjoy the opportunity to learn in small classes taught by world-class academicians and researchers. Students are participating in ground-breaking research in a wide variety of fields. It is a great time to consider doing an undergraduate and graduate degree in Geological Sciences at the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU). Whether your interest is in graduate studies, in a possible undergraduate major or concentration, or in finding out a little more about Geological Sciences,
It is the aim of the Department to equip students with modern knowledge while utilizing state of the art technology developed in the recent past decades so as to widen their scope and enable them keep in pace with these emerging technologies. Students will be introduced to Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Informanairobi
tion System (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS), modern Geophysical and Geochemical resource exploration techniques, among others.Employment opportunities in the Mineral Resources, Environment, Energy, Water Resources, Geotechnical Engineering and other Earth sciences disciplines as well as in allied educational sectors are better than ever before and our graduates are well placed in acquiring jobs in these fields both in public and private sectors. You will be joining a well-knit, socially active community of fellow Geological sciences fraternity and will acquire life-long skills and a network of colleagues and friends. Welcome to the world of Geological Sciences!
Vision
To be a leading Department offering internationally competitive academic programmes in Geological Sciences and adopting of new scientific ideas and technologies for the optimum utilization of geological resources to transform lives.
Mission
To be a leading Department that offers quality education and training through teaching, research and development with emphasis on innovative methods that enable geological resource utilization in a sustainable manner.
Objectives
a) Develop undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that meet the needs of sustainable geological resources through exploration, exploitation and utilization in the country and beyond.
b) Conduct research that provides answers to integrated geological resource extraction and environmental conservation.
c) Develop interactive knowledge management systems which facilitate the transfer of knowledge, information and technical skills to key stakeholders for improved livelihood.
d) Be proactive in the formulation of policies that mainstream the use of geological resources to foster county and national development.
e) Create partnership with institutions and organizations involved in relevant sciences and technological research in order to promote proper utilization of geological resources
f) Mobilize resources for developing the physical infrastructure of the Department, the School and the University College and offering services to the Communities through formulation of research proposals and programmes .
Career opportunities for graduates
B.Sc. Geology graduates are employed in the following Ministries: Environment and Mineral Resources (MEMR), Energy (ME), Water and irrigation (MW&I), Agriculture (MA), Public Works (MPW), Roads (MR) and Regional Development (MRD, among others. They are also employed in Parastatals like Universities and other tertiary institutions, National Museum, KenGen, Geothermal Development Corporation (GDC) and Water Resources Management Authorities (WARMA). Others are engaged by private mineral exploration companies e.g. those prospecting for water, gemstones, gold, rare earth elements, petroleum and coal. Other potential employers include local and international corporations involved in geological resources exploration and exploitation while others joining the construction industry firms e.g. cement manufacturing companies and brick making industries, among others. Other graduates are engaged in self employment.
