South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement through the donation of about 4000 tree seedlings to various neighbouring like Kathsngsthini,ST Stephene, Thome, Nzeveni, Mikuyuni, Usengyo, Mbitini, Musingi, Kanyonyoo, Masaani, Ilani, Kwa Vonza, Kyamboo Primary and Junior schools. The latest is Kiliko Primary School. These is a meaningful community outreach initiatives aimed at supporting Kenya’s national tree-growing campaign of increasing forest cover.
The outreach activity brought together SEKU staff, pupils, teachers, and the school board members in a collective effort to promote environmental sustainability and create awareness on the importance of tree planting in combating climate change and environmental degradation.
Speaking during the event, SEKU led by Mr. Danson Kioko a technologist in the department of Environmental Science and Land Resources Management emphasized the University’s dedication to supporting national efforts toward increasing forest cover and achieving the vision of a greener and more sustainable Kenya. The donation of the seedlings is expected to enhance tree cover within the school and surrounding community while instilling environmental responsibility among young learners.
The pupils and teachers of Kiliko Primary School actively participated in the tree-planting exercise, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to environmental conservation. The initiative also served as an educational opportunity to encourage learners to become ambassadors of environmental protection within their communities.
SEKU continues to champion community outreach programmes that positively impact society while promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Through such initiatives, the University remains committed to nurturing partnerships that contribute to national development and the realization of Kenya’s green agenda.
