South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) led by the acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francis Wachira has taken a significant step towards transforming its future by hosting a consultative public participation forum on the proposed SEKU Smart City Master Plan. The forum, held at the University, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to deliberate on the ambitious blueprint presented by Mr., Samuel Shikuku from Frugal Ventures Ltd.
The consultative meeting attracted representatives from the National Government, the County Government, the local community, development partners, and members of the University community. The engagement provided an inclusive platform for stakeholders to review the proposed master plan, share their views, and make recommendations that will help shape the University's long-term development agenda.
The SEKU Smart City Master Plan envisions the University as a world-class, innovation-driven institution integrated with a modern, sustainable, and inclusive smart city. The plan seeks to maximize the University's vast land resources while creating an environment that supports education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community development.
Among the key components of the proposed master plan are designated zones for renewable energy production, smart technology and innovation hubs, academic and research facilities, residential developments, commercial centres, sports and recreational facilities, tourism, agribusiness, and environmental conservation. The development will be supported by intelligent infrastructure incorporating smart mobility, digital connectivity, efficient utility systems, and environmentally sustainable technologies.
Speaking during the forum, participants lauded the University's vision of developing a smart city that will not only enhance learning and research but also stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, attract investment, and improve the quality of life for surrounding communities.
The public participation forum underscored SEKU's commitment to transparency, stakeholder engagement, and participatory planning. The views and recommendations collected during the session will be incorporated into the final Smart City Master Plan to ensure it reflects the aspirations and priorities of all stakeholders.
The initiative marks a major milestone in SEKU's journey towards becoming a leading centre of academic excellence, innovation, sustainability, and socio-economic transformation in the region. Once implemented, the Smart City Master Plan is expected to position the University as a model institution that integrates education, technology, environmental stewardship, and community development in line with Kenya's Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
