South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Medical Laboratory Students Association (SEKUMLSA) recently carried out a successful community outreach event at Kwa Vonza, to offer free medical services and health education.
The outreach program was organized by students and staff as part of their commitment to community service and practical learning. The initiative aimed to improve access to basic healthcare services while giving students hands-on experience in real-world medical settings.
During the event, community members benefited from a wide range of free medical services, including:
- Blood pressure screening
- Blood sugar testing
- Basic laboratory tests
- Health consultations
- Health education and counseling
Residents were also educated on the importance of regular medical check-ups, disease prevention, proper nutrition, and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
The outreach emphasized preventive healthcare, encouraging early detection and management of common health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Many residents expressed gratitude for the services, noting that access to medical testing is often limited or costly.
Speaking during the event, student leaders highlighted that the activity aligns with SEKU’s mission of community engagement and professional development. By participating in such initiatives, students not only serve the community but also enhance their diagnostic and interpersonal skills under supervision.
This activity strengthened the relationship between the university and the local community. It demonstrated the power of collaboration and the positive impact that young healthcare professionals can have when they step beyond the classroom.
This reaffirmed the associations its commitment to organizing more outreach programs in the future, continuing to serve and support communities through accessible and reliable healthcare services.
