The Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) recently organized a three-day capacity building workshop aimed at equipping stakeholders with essential skills and knowledge on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET). The training was conducted in line with the requirements and guidelines of the State Department for TVET, which continues to champion quality, relevance, and industry-driven training within TVET institutions.
The training was officially opened by the DVC- Academic Research and Innovation Prof. Harrison Maithya and it brought together trainers, curriculum implementers, assessors, industry representatives, and institutional administrators from various TVET institutions. The initiative sought to strengthen participants’ understanding of CBET principles and enhance their capacity to effectively implement competency-based training approaches in their respective institutions.
Speaking during the opening session, facilitators emphasized the critical role of CBET in transforming technical education by focusing on practical skills, industry standards, and learner competence. Participants were taken through key areas including curriculum interpretation, preparation of learning outcomes, assessment methods, learner-centered training approaches, and preparation of assessment tools aligned to occupational standards.
The training also highlighted the importance of aligning training programs with labor market demands to ensure graduates acquire relevant competencies required in the modern workplace. Stakeholders were encouraged to embrace continuous professional development in order to effectively deliver quality TVET programs that meet national and global standards.
Throughout the three-day engagement, participants actively engaged in group discussions, practical demonstrations, presentations, and collaborative learning sessions designed to deepen their understanding of CBET implementation. The workshop further provided a platform for sharing experiences, challenges, and best practices among TVET practitioners.
The Directorate of TVET reiterated its commitment to supporting institutions and stakeholders in the implementation of CBET as part of the broader agenda to improve the quality and competitiveness of technical education and training in the country. Participants expressed appreciation for the training, noting that it had enhanced their skills and confidence in implementing competency-based approaches within their institutions.
The workshop concluded with a call for continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of CBET and realization of the objectives set by the State Department for TVET. The capacity building initiative is expected to contribute significantly towards strengthening the TVET sector and producing competent graduates equipped with industry-relevant skills.
