JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PRINCIPAL RESEARCH FELLOW GRADE 4 – REF: SEKU/ADV/AA/01/23/09/2026

Job specification
The duties and responsibilities entail:

• Teaching, guiding and supervising students, conduct research and publish research findings for the academic excellence of the University and community as a whole.
• Writing proposals to attract funds to support post graduate students and staff development in the University and building of existing body of knowledge.
• Conducting research and disseminate the findings through publications, seminars, workshops, conferences for personal, community and institutional advancement.
• Reviewing research and academic articles/journals to enhance and uphold quality needed in the research documents for effective teaching and learning processes to take place in the University.
• Preparing and reviewing curricula and course contents for continual improvement to meet the ever changing needs and market demands.
• Preparing course descriptions, course outlines, teaching aids, specimens and appropriate modes of delivery for effective teaching and learning process to take place.
• Supervising and guiding young scholars and postgraduate students to ensure appropriate quality curriculum delivery and research output is achieved.
• Forging collaboration with industries and other Universities both locally and internationally for students’ attachments and exchange program.
• Establishing links with local and international communities for continuous transfer of knowledge and innovation for betterment of the society.
• Serving in local and international committees to provide high level expertise for informed decision making to benefit the University as a whole.
• Developing strategic policies and procedures that can guide in efficient training and learning processes and therefore contribute to realization of the University mandate.
• Serving as external examiner in local and international Universities to enable exchange of ideas for academic excellence.
• Assessing students during industrial attachment and teaching practice to ensure appropriate theoretical and practical application at the end of the course.
• Acting as personal tutor and mentor, giving first line support to students.
• Providing first line support for colleagues, referring them to sources of further help if required.

Person Specification
For appointment to this post, a candidate must have:

• An earned Ph.D. or equivalent Degree qualification in the relevant field from an accredited and recognized university.
• At least three (3) years teaching experience at the University as a Senior Lecturer Grade 5 or Senior Research Fellow/industry experience or equivalent.
• A minimum of forty-eight (48) publication points as a Senior Lecturer or equivalent of which at least thirty-two (32) should be from refereed scholarly journals.
• Supervised a minimum of four (4) postgraduate students to completion including at least one (1) doctoral student as Senior Lecturer.
• Attracted research or development funds as a Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Fellow.
• Registered with the relevant professional body (where applicable).
• International authority on a specialist field; acknowledged for his/her contributions to the development of principles, practices and research in the field across international boundaries.
• Proficiency in computer applications.
• Satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity.

SENIOR LECTURER/SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW GRADE 5 – REF: SEKU/ADV/AA/02/23/09/2026

Job specification
The duties and responsibilities entail:

• Seeking and disseminating knowledge through research, publication, teaching and supervision of students doing project research, grant seeking and curriculum development so as to contribute to the mandate of the University.
• Developing fundable research proposals that can attract grants from internal and external donors.
• Conducting research in collaboration with local, regional and international collaborators in order to tackle different issues in the society.
• Disseminating research findings through publication of journals to share findings and knowledge to the public.
• Training, mentoring, supervising and evaluating students carrying out research to ensure the quality of research submitted is of high standards.
• Reviewing research proposals in the University to ensure they can attract grants.
• Providing consultancy services to solve community challenges and contribute to development of society at large.
• Acquiring patents from innovations to protect knowledge and ensure proper benefits to the innovators including the University.
• Liaising with teaching, technical and administrative staff to enhance and monitor quality course delivery.
• Developing adaptable teaching delivery models to ensure that learning is effective and continuous.
• Carrying out course assessment and examine students to test understanding of learned concepts and allow progression from one level to another.
• Identifying required learning resource materials such as books to enhance quality teaching.
• Developing practical modules/manuals in line with developed curriculum to enhance practical applications of learned concepts.
• Initiate community participatory development projects and activities that benefit the University as well as the community at large.
• Showcasing innovations of the University during community exhibitions.
• Establishing linkages and networks with external stakeholders that can fund projects/research in the University.
• Offering leadership in preparation of course outlines to ensure that the relevant syllabus is covered.
• Preparing course modules to ensure that teaching delivery is according to the best practices in the market.
• Supervising postgraduate students when carrying out their research projects and writing their thesis to ensure they are projects which can attract grants.
• Carrying out administrative duties in the relevant department or school and ensure that everything runs smoothly.
• Providing career guidance and counselling to students on matters that relate to area of expertise.
• Managing research funds from grants.
• Helping in developing and coordinating income generating short courses and training programmes.

Person Specification
For appointment to this post, a candidate must have:

• An earned PhD or equivalent Degree qualification in the relevant area from an accredited and recognized university.
• At least three (3) years teaching experience at the University level as a Lecturer SEKU Grade 6 or six (6) years research/industry experience.
• A minimum of thirty-two (32) publication points as a Lecturer or equivalent, of which at least twenty-four (24) should be from refereed scholarly journals.
• Supervised at least three (3) postgraduate students to completion as a Lecturer SEKU Grade 6 or equivalent.
• Registered with the relevant professional body (where applicable).
• Have attracted research or development funds as a Lecturer SEKU Grade 6 or its equivalent.
• In-depth professional/discipline specific knowledge and experience in a specialized field or broad knowledge of a number of fields.
• Proficiency in computer applications.
• Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya (2010) on Leadership and Integrity upon successful appointment.

LECTURER GRADE 6A – REF: SEKU/ADV/AA/03/23/09/2026

Job specification
The duties and responsibilities entail:

• Lecturing in area of specialization in accordance with the syllabus;
• Coordinating course projects and practical work;
• Preparing teaching/learning materials;
• Setting, invigilating and marking examinations/assignments;
• Carrying out research work in relevant field or specialization;
• Preparing students progress reports;
• Developing proposals for research funding;
• Writing journal articles and books;
• Presenting academic papers in conferences/seminars/workshops or symposia;
• Developing and reviewing academic programmes/curricula; and
• Supervising Tutorial/Junior Research Fellows and students.
• Undertake consultancies with local and international organizations within areas of expertise to enhance the image of the University;
• Establish collaborative linkages and networks through communication, collaboration and participation for resource mobilization for the University;
• Present research findings and innovations to international conferences in order to increase the visibility of the University and to influence international policy environment for improvement of life;
• Engage with local and international stakeholders to establish linkages and networks in order to work together for the betterment of communities in various ways such as research and innovations;
• Execute budgets for student field trips for academic exposure and the application of theory;
• Control and manage research budgets to ensure accountability of allocated funds.

Person Specification
For appointment to this post, a candidate must have:

• Have an earned PhD in the relevant field from an accredited and recognized University;
• Have a Masters degree in the relevant field from an accredited and recognized University;
• Have a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field from an accredited and recognized University;
• Be registered or registerable with the relevant professional body (where applicable).
