South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) held a three-day National Values Online Evaluation and Reporting Process Training from 29th to 31st July 2025. The training targeted Cohesion and National Values Mainstreaming Unit, chaired by Prof. Francis Wachira, Deputy Vice Chancellor- Corporate Services and the Human Resource Management Directorate, led by Mr. Erastus Ndeleva.
The training aimed to equip participants with practical skills and tools for accurately reporting the university’s compliance with National Values and Principles of Governance as outlined in article 231 (1) (c) and 234 (2) (h) of the Constitution of Kenya. The sessions provided hands-on guidance on how to collect, analyze and present data for the Public Service Commission’s annual evaluation reports.
The event was officially opened by Prof. Harrison Maithya, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, Research and Innovation, who emphasized SEKU’s commitment to integrating national values into its policies, operations and service delivery. Facilitators, Mr. Francis Lemarkat and Ms. Sharifa Mwinyishee from the Public Service Commission, gave important insights into specific areas of compliance and reporting. Participants engaged in interactive topics covering National and Public Service Values and Principles of Governance; roles of internal committee members, management and staff in implementing and monitoring values; declaration of income, assets and liabilities; thematic areas, performance standards and indicators, and overview of the evaluation tool. According to the unit coordinator, Dr. Norah Mose, the training marked a turning point in how national values are understood, complied with and reported at SEKU.

12^th Graduation Ceremony

The University is in the process of planning for the 12^th Graduation Ceremony for those students who will have completed their studies by 29^th August, 2025.

Students who are anticipating to graduate during the 12^th Graduation Ceremony are required to fill two copies of graduation application form obtainable here. The dully filled forms together with a copy of national ID card should be forwarded to the respective Schools or Directors of Campuses on or before 29^th August, 2025.

By copy of this circular, the Deans of Schools are notified to receive and forward the forms and the attached copy of national ID card to the University Examinations Section on or before 3^rd September, 2025.

ENGAGE project, spearheaded by the University of Nairobi (UoN) in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with a mission to empower adolescent girls and young women in Kenya. Through targeted training in data science, with a special focus on public health applications, the project, funded by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, seeks to equip participants with skills to harness the power of health data and foster equitable health policy decisions.
South Eastern Kenya University Kitui campus was privileged to hold the ENGAGE Math Contest. This contest was meant to highlight efforts and empower under privileged young ladies for training in data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning for public health solutions.
ENGAGE is committed to reaching young women in rural areas, where opportunities for advanced training in data science are limited. By partnering with six regional universities—Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Meru University of Science and Technology, South Eastern Kenya University, Kabarak University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and Pwani University—the project ensures equitable access to transformative education.
This is the second cohort after the first cohort graduated in august 2024 and the successful girls will commence learning on 5^th august 2025.

South Eastern Kenya University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda together with other Vice Chancellors from Public Universitis in Kenya attended a meeting held at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), Karen, Nairobi.

.The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr. ݐ鰝ர퐥ݐⰝர퐬 ݐ찝ࢰ퐠ݐ谝ଠݐ࠰퐚ݐ氝۰퐚, accompanied by the PS for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, held a consultative meeting with Vice-Chancellors of public universities, the HELB CEO, Mr. Geoffrey Monari, and the acting CEO of the Universities Fund, Mr. Edwin Wanyonyi.

The meeting focused on sustainable financing solutions for higher education because Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Education, has a serious intent to reform, rescue, and revitalize Kenyan public universities.
Public-private partnerships (PPPs), Endowment Funds, Income-generating University Ventures, and International Collaborations are approaches essential for the long-term stability, quality output and autonomy of public universities.

South Eastern Kenya University led by the Vice- Chancellor Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda participated in a consultative meeting led by State University of New York (SUNY). The meeting brought together Vice- Chancellors from various Universities led by Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for Higher Education Dr. Beatrice Inyangala.
The SUNY Africa Initiative aims to strengthen connections between SUNY and Africa Institutions through student engagement, cultural exchange, and academic partnerships.
The meeting focused on strengthening higher education within the region, particularly in relation to the East African Community (EAC) and according to the Commission for University Education (CUE)
The team was led by Prof. Melur K. Ramasubramanian, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost, Prof. Winston “Wole” Soboyejo, President, SUNY Polytechnic Institute @SUNYPolyInst, Dr. Peter O. South Eastern Kenya University Gender Mainstreaming Unit today has received USAWA award by the National Gender and Equality Commission for attaining not more than two thirds at the council level.
This has been a great milestone to SEKU because Usawa Awards are meant to recognize individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to advancing gender equality and inclusion in Kenya and SEKU was one of the best institutions.
The award was received by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda and the Unit Coordinator Dr. Winny Kaluki
This event took place at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, organized by the National Gender and Equality Commission while unveiling their Strategic Plan—one that defends equality, dignity inclusion for women, men, youth, children, PWDs, older persons, minorities & marginalized groups.

SUPPLEMENTARY and SPECIAL EXAMINATIONS for the 2024/2025 Academic year are scheduled to be done from 28^th July to 8^th August 2025 at the main campus.

The supplementary examinations charges are; a registration fee of Kenya shillings five hundred only (ksh.500.00) and a fee of Kenya shillings one thousand only (ksh.l 000.00) per unit.

Special examinations are not charged.

The schedule for these examinations is as follows:-

7^th - 11^th July, 2025

• Students to confirm their eligibility for supplementary examinations at their respective schools and pay the required charges at the student finance office.
• Eligible students for Special Examinations to register at their respective schools.

14^th to 18^th July, 2025

• Eligible students who have paid for supplementary examination charges to register unit (s) at the Directorate of ICT.

28^th July to 8^th August 2025

• Sitting for supplementary/Special examinations

ENGAGE is training the next generation of women in AI & Data Science. 

South Eastern Kenya University and the East Africa Grain Council co-hosted a successful Agribusiness Expo, which brought together more than 30 exhibitors from the agribusiness, finance, insurance, ICT, and equipment sectors, along with up to 1,500 farmers from Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties and beyond.
The expo was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Research and Innovation, Prof. Harrison Maithya. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Rose Musyoka, with additional remarks from Mr. Gerald Masika, Executive Director of the East Africa Grain Council.
Prof. Maithya noted that the expo served as an "open-air classroom, a living lab where farmers meet researchers, students meet entrepreneurs, and innovation meets need." He added, “We are especially excited about the practical demonstrations—from regenerative farming methods to solar-powered irrigation systems—which echo our belief in the power of contextual, scalable innovations.”
The theme of the expo, “Climate Smart Technologies and Practices for Sustainable Food Systems,” directly addressed the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the face of a changing climate.
This collaboration reaffirmed a shared commitment to promoting technologies and practices that are not only climate-smart but also smart for business, nutrition, and the future. It emphasized investing in solutions that restore our soils, protect our water, feed our families, and grow our economy.

South Eastern Kenya University students led by Dr. Matheaus Kauti were privileged to partner with students from the University of Texas, Austin (UT-A) led by Prof. Patrick Bixler during this year summer school last months at Mombasa and Kwale Counties.

During this period they examined the Impact of Solar Water Farms (SWFs) and other decentralized water technologies to urban and peri urban communities in Bamburi, Mishomoroni, Jomvu, Miritini, Mikindani and Diani in Ukunda.

This officials paid a courtesy visit to South Eastern Kenya University to evaluate Teaching and Learning environment and its output in the university.

Pioneer Insurance in collaboration with Hearts of Green and Wangari Maathai Institute yesterday launched a tree planting project aimed at planting and growing of trees along the University highway from the Main Gate to the Northern part of the campus. The project involves planting trees on both sides of the highway covering a stretch of nine (9) kilometers.
The launch was graced by members of the University Management Board led by the vice chancellor Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda, guest from the Ministry of Education, State Department of Research Higher Education and the leadership of the three organizations. Phase one has been completed and more than 3000 trees have been plated on a stretch of 4.5 KM and phase two will start soon.
Hearts of Green Organization and Wangari Maathai Institute under the Landscape Repair and Transformation has partnered with Pioneer Insurance to rehabilitate 9KM stretch.
Based on our philosophy; Arid to green their aim is to transform the stretch into a green space by growing indigenous and fruit trees.
