The just-concluded Student Innovation Challenge marked another milestone in the institution’s journey of fostering creativity, research, and entrepreneurship among its students.

The event, held last week, officially kicked off with an inspiring opening ceremony presided over by the University’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda. In his remarks, he emphasized the critical role of innovation in driving sustainable development and encouraged students to embrace creativity as a tool for solving real-world challenges.

Throughout the competition, participants from various faculties showcased groundbreaking ideas and projects aimed at addressing pressing societal issues. From smart agricultural solutions and renewable energy innovations to digital platforms improving healthcare and education, the challenge highlighted the diversity and ingenuity of SEKU students.

Teams worked diligently to develop prototypes and present their concepts before a panel of judges drawn from academia and industry. The judging criteria focused on originality, feasibility, impact, and scalability, pushing participants to think beyond theory and develop practical, implementable solutions.

The event culminated in a colorful closing ceremony officiated by Hon. Kevin Kinengo. Speaker of Kitui County Assembly accompanied by Hon paul Maluki. MCA Kithumula. In his address, he lauded the students for their creativity and urged them to continue leveraging innovation to create opportunities and address community challenges. He also highlighted the importance of partnerships between universities and county governments in nurturing young innovators.

Winners were awarded in recognition of their exceptional projects, but the broader achievement of the challenge was the platform it created for learning, collaboration, and growth. Participants benefited from mentorship, constructive feedback, and the opportunity to refine their ideas in a competitive yet supportive environment.

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Management held an engagement session with the Managing Director of Sidian Bank and his team, who presented a proposal to partner with the University as its banking service provider.

During the session, the Sidian Bank team outlined a range of initiatives aimed at adding value to the University beyond conventional banking services. Among the key proposals were mentorship programmes for students, including opportunities for industrial attachment, as well as plans to support the development of an innovation hub within the University.

Speaking during the presentation, the Managing Director emphasized the Bank’s commitment to building a mutually beneficial partnership. “Our goal is to add value to SEKU not only as a financial partner, but also by supporting student development and innovation,” he noted.

SEKU Management received the proposal and acknowledged the potential benefits outlined, indicating that it would be reviewed in line with the University’s internal processes.

The engagement reflects the University’s continued openness to partnerships that enhance student opportunities, innovation, and institutional growth.

The 1^st SEKU Students Innovation Challenge kicked off in vibrant fashion at the main campus of South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) on 15^th and 16^th April 2026, bringing together bright student minds under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Societal Transformation.” The event marks a significant milestone in nurturing a culture of creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship among students.

Students from various campuses are actively participating in the challenge, showcasing innovative ideas aimed at addressing real-world societal issues. The organizing committee, co-convened by Dr. Gideon Rotich and Dr. Sedina Misango comprised of academic and administrative staff from various schools and directorates of the University all who have played a key role in ensuring the success of the event.

The occasion was officially opened by Ms. Phyllis Mbiyu from Viktoria Ventures, who delivered an inspiring keynote address on innovation. She emphasized that innovation begins with discomfort, urging young innovators to embrace the uncertainty and challenges that come with doing things differently. She further highlighted the importance of keeping the end-user in mind when developing solutions, ensuring that innovations remain relevant and impactful.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor expressed his delight at the breadth and quality of innovations presented. He commended the students for developing ideas that are not only technologically driven but also deeply rooted in solving local challenges. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting student innovators, pledging institutional backing to help transform their ideas into practical solutions that can benefit society.

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Management Board recently participated in a Transformative one week Leadership Training Programme held at the Kenya School of Government, Mombasa.

The programme provided a valuable platform for learning, reflection, and strategic engagement, all aimed at fostering effective governance and forward-thinking leadership within the University.

Key thematic areas covered during the training included strategy and transformation, effective leadership for performance improvement, team leadership, corporate branding, leadership commitment, diversity and inequality, as well as action planning. These topics were carefully designed to equip participants with practical tools and perspectives necessary for navigating the evolving higher education landscape.

Through interactive sessions, group discussions, and collaborative exercises, members of the Management Board explored innovative approaches to leading change, improving service delivery, and promoting a culture of excellence. The programme also emphasized the importance of aligning leadership practices with SEKU’s vision and mandate to ensure sustainable growth and development.

South eastern key a university (SEKU) recently had the honor of hosting a distinguished delegation from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), led by Prof. Caleb Nindo. The visit marks an important step toward fostering international academic collaboration and expanding opportunities for research and student engagement.

The primary objective of the visit was to gain a comprehensive understanding of research environment, academic programs, and institutional strengths. During their time on campus, the delegation engaged with faculty members led by Prof. Charles Ndung’u. Dean School of Agriculture, Environment, Water and Natural Resources. explored various departments, and held discussions centered on areas of mutual academic and research interest.

The visit provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, allowing both institutions to share insights into their respective teaching approaches, research priorities, and innovation strategies. These interactions highlighted numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in interdisciplinary research, faculty exchange, and joint academic initiatives.

A key outcome of the visit is the intention to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions. This prospective partnership is expected to formalize cooperation in areas such as collaborative research projects, student and staff mobility programs, and shared academic resources.

Once and MOU is signed, this engagement will pave the way for a strong and mutually beneficial partnership with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Students from the School of Business and Economics recently embarked on an enriching educational trip to Mombasa, designed to bridge classroom theory with real-world practice. The trip brought together learners from various academic programs, offering them a valuable opportunity to gain practical insights into key areas of business, economics, and sustainable development.

The students were accompanied by Dr. Onesmus Mbaabu, Chairman of the Department of Economics, and Dr. Vincent Ochieng, Chairman of the Department of Management Science, whose guidance and expertise greatly enhanced the learning experience throughout the trip.

Logistics and Warehousing in Practice
The first day of the trip saw students visit the Mitchell Cotts Container Freight Station. During this visit, they were introduced to essential aspects of logistics and supply chain management. Students explored operations within warehousing facilities, gaining a deeper understanding of customs bonded areas, as well as the processes involved in imports and exports. The practical exposure to logistics management systems allowed students to appreciate the complexities and coordination required in global trade.

Port Operations and Data Management
On the second day, the group visited the Kenya Ports Authority, where they learned about the critical role ports play in international trade. Students were taken through port operations including shipping procedures, docking processes, cargo handling, and the management of berths. This experience provided a clear picture of how maritime logistics supports economic activities.

Later, the students visited the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). They were introduced to various career opportunities within the organization and gained insights into key functions such as mapping, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination. The visit highlighted the importance of data in decision-making and policy formulation, reinforcing concepts learned in class.
Sustainability in Action

The final day of the trip took students to Haller Park, where they witnessed a remarkable transformation of formerly degraded land into a thriving ecosystem. This visit offered a practical demonstration of sustainable development principles. Students learned how environmental restoration, conservation, and responsible resource management can create long-term ecological and economic benefits.

In preparation for the upcoming Student Innovation Challenge, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) organized a comprehensive Innovation Training Programme aimed at equipping students with essential skills in creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship. The mentorship-focused session was proudly sponsored by the Chain Project, whose support continues to empower student-led innovation initiatives.

The event brought together students, trainers, and university officials for a full day of intensive learning and engagement.

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Eliud Muli. Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research, and Innovation), who underscored the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and research excellence among students.

The morning sessions focused on cultivating an innovation mindset and identifying opportunities. Dr. Sedina Misango, idea generation techniques and design thinking principles by Prof. Josphart Kimatu
Mr. Jenner Akwale, an external trainer from JKUAT (DIPUIL). His session on “From Idea to Prototype” provided students with practical insights into transforming abstract ideas into tangible solutions and understanding market needs and crafting compelling value propositions. He emphasized the importance of aligning innovations with real customer needs to ensure relevance and sustainability.

Students were also trained on innovation pitching and presentation skills, where they learned how to effectively communicate their ideas to judges, investors, and stakeholder. An essential component of the upcoming challenge.
The training also addressed the critical aspect of ethics in innovation, with Dr. Matthews Okoth highlighting the need for responsible and sustainable solutions, an interactive Q&A session followed by Dr. Fransisca Mwangangi and Dr. Benson Ojwang, giving students the opportunity to seek clarification and share their perspectives.

Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
The Innovation Training Programme marked a significant step in preparing students for the Student Innovation Challenge. With the support of the Chain Project and dedicated facilitators, participants left the session better equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to develop impactful solutions.

SEKU continues to position itself as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, nurturing students to become problem-solvers and change-makers in society.

The Mr & Miss Talent event, held in March 2026, was a remarkable success, bringing together students from all disciplines to showcase their diverse talents. The event provided a vibrant platform for creativity, self-expression, and healthy competition, leaving attendees inspired and entertained.
Participants demonstrated exceptional skills across various categories, captivating both the judges and the audience. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, elegance, and a strong sense of community.

Students from South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) delivered an impressive performance at the recent Taekwondo Championship organized by the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF). The highly competitive event brought together talented students from universities in the central conference providing a platform for them to demonstrate their skills, discipline, and sportsmanship in the martial art of Taekwondo.

Representing SEKU with pride and determination, the university’s athletes showcased remarkable ability and resilience throughout the competition. Their strong performances earned the institution several medals and highlighted the growing strength of SEKU in university-level martial arts competitions.

Among the standout performers was Haroun Hassan, who secured a Silver Medal in the Lightweight, Isaac Munyao, got a Silver Medal in the Fin Weight Division and Isaac Nioka earned a Bronze Medal in the Bantam weight Division

SEKU University Management Board expressed immense pride in the team’s achievements. In recognition of the athletes’ hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence, the medals were officially handed over to the participants by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Wachira. During the presentation, he congratulated the students for representing the university with distinction and for upholding SEKU’s reputation in national university sports competitions.

The appointment follows a vigorous and highly competitive recruitment process where he emerged as the best.

The confirmation recognizes his extensive experience in higher education management and his long-standing commitment to academic excellence.

As Academic Registrar, he will be responsible for overseeing the university’s core academic processes, including student admissions, registration, examinations management, graduation coordination, and the maintenance of academic records. The office plays a central role in ensuring that academic policies are implemented efficiently while upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and transparency.

Over the years, he has served in various academic and administrative capacities within the university, contributing significantly to policy development, institutional planning, and strengthening of academic systems. South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Medical Laboratory Students Association (SEKUMLSA) recently carried out a successful community outreach event at Kwa Vonza, to offer free medical services and health education.
The outreach program was organized by students and staff as part of their commitment to community service and practical learning. The initiative aimed to improve access to basic healthcare services while giving students hands-on experience in real-world medical settings.

During the event, community members benefited from a wide range of free medical services, including:

• Blood pressure screening
• Blood sugar testing
• Basic laboratory tests
• Health consultations
• Health education and counseling

Residents were also educated on the importance of regular medical check-ups, disease prevention, proper nutrition, and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
The outreach emphasized preventive healthcare, encouraging early detection and management of common health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Many residents expressed gratitude for the services, noting that access to medical testing is often limited or costly.

The signing ceremony brought together representatives from SEKU management and KUSU, led by the National Secretary General, Dr. Charles Mukhwaya, marking a significant milestone in strengthening industrial harmony and enhancing staff welfare within the University.

The agreement underscores SEKU’s commitment to upholding negotiated terms and fostering a supportive working environment for unionisable staff. It reflects a shared dedication between management and the union to promote fairness, transparency, and mutual respect in the implementation of employment terms as outlined in the 2013–2017 CBA.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Eng. Shitanda reaffirmed the University’s resolve to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration with staff unions to ensure institutional stability and growth. He emphasized that harmonious labour relations are critical in advancing SEKU’s mandate in teaching, research, innovation, and community service.

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) successfully conducted a heartwarming outreach initiative to support learners at Katangi Special School, reaffirming the University’s strong commitment to inclusion, equity, and community service.
The initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Sarah Ngesu Coordinator, Disability Mainstreaming Unit in collaboration with Dr. Maurine Muleka, Coordinator, National Cohesion and National Values Mainstreaming Unit, bringing together staff, students, and friends of the University in a collective act of compassion and solidarity.
Learners with special needs often face unique challenges that require consistent support from society. Recognizing this, the SEKU community came together to create a more supportive and empowering learning environment for the pupils at Katangi Special School. Through generous contributions and active participation, the University fraternity demonstrated that meaningful change begins with collective action.
The outreach program not only involved the donation of essential items but also provided an opportunity for engagement and interaction with the learners fostering a sense of belonging, dignity, and encouragement among the children.

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) continues to strengthen its commitment to career guidance and community engagement through active participation in the Kajiado South Education Career Mentorship Programme, held on 5th and 6th February 2026 in Kimana and Loitokitok towns, respectively.
The University delegation, led by Dr. Faraj Yatundu, Chair of Marketing, alongside Dr. Grace Mutia, Coordinator, Career Services. The team represented SEKU in a programme that brought together over 2,000 former and current Form Four candidates, their parents and guardians, as well as local leaders from Kajiado South Sub-County.
Each year, high schools across Kenya graduate thousands of Form Four students who transition to universities, technical institutes, and middle-level colleges. However, many learners face challenges in identifying career paths that align with their academic strengths, interests, and subject choices. The mentorship programme was designed to address this critical gap by providing timely, relevant, and practical career guidance.
In an era marked by rapid global transformation driven by information technology and expanding knowledge, students must develop adaptability, creativity, independent thinking, and lifelong learning skills. During the mentorship sessions, the SEKU team engaged participants on informed career decision-making, emerging academic opportunities, and the importance of aligning career choices with individual abilities and future market demands.
SEKU also showcased its wide range of academic programmes, student support services, and career development initiatives, while offering guidance on university entry requirements and progression pathways. Parents and guardians were equally engaged to help them better support learners during this crucial transition period.
The Kajiado South Education Career Mentorship Programme provided a valuable platform for SEKU to interact with prospective students and the wider community, reinforcing the University’s role in empowering young people to make responsible, informed, and future-oriented career choices.

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) conducted a comprehensive Induction Workshop for members of the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eng. Douglas Shitanda and new the newly elected Student Governing Council (SGC)

The two-day workshop was designed to equip the Student Governing Council with knowledge, skills, and values necessary for effective leadership, responsible governance, and constructive engagement with the university community. It also provided a vital platform for interaction between student leaders and members of management, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration.

During the induction, SGC members were taken through a wide range of thematic sessions covering key aspects of university governance and student leadership. These included corporate governance, student–staff relations, conflict resolution, financial management and budgeting, as well as the structure and operations of the University.

Additional sessions focused on cohesion and governance, security and safety, the university procurement process, drug and substance abuse prevention, etiquette and protocol, and a detailed overview of the SEKUSA Constitution, among other critical topics.

The workshop underscored SEKU’s commitment to nurturing informed, ethical, and accountable student leadership that aligns with the University’s values and strategic objectives. By empowering student leaders through structured capacity-building initiatives, the University continues to promote a harmonious learning environment and effective student representation.

Makueni University College (MUCO) has officially joined the ranks of Kenya’s prestigious higher education institutions. Gazetted in November 2025 as a constituent college of South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), MUCO is the result of a rigorous accreditation process by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

Located in the heart of Makueni County, the college is a strategic engine for regional growth, designed to bridge the gap in higher education access while offering globally competitive SEKU-awarded degrees.

A Visionary Foundation
The formalization of MUCO under Legal Notice No. 177 of 2025 is a major milestone in the county’s history. This establishment aligns with the BETA Makueni County Economic Blueprint and fulfills the 2022 presidential commitment to decentralize and expand educational infrastructure across the country.

While currently a constituent college, the institutional roadmap is clear: MUCO is on a steady trajectory to becoming a fully-fledged, independent university, fostering a culture of research and community-driven innovation.

To navigate this critical transition, Professor Jonathan Muema Mwania has been appointed as the inaugural Acting Principal of Makueni University College (MUCO).

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) was honoured to host the Athletics Kenya Universities Cross Country Championships, a prestigious sporting event that brought together university athletes from across the country. The championship was successfully held at the SEKU campus, reaffirming the University’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence in sports development and student engagement.

The colourful event was officially flagged off by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Research and Innovation, Prof. Harrison Maithya, who applauded the participating institutions and emphasized the importance of sports in nurturing discipline, teamwork, and holistic student development. Prof. Maithya noted that SEKU remains committed to supporting both academic excellence and co-curricular activities as part of its mandate.
